Instagram’s popularity has grown at an exceptional rate since it was launched in 2010 and acquired by Facebook in 2012. Along with that growth in popularity, misconceptions about the social media platform have grown as well, particularly as it relates to businesses.
Let’s take a look a three of the most common misconceptions about businesses using Instagram.
1. It’s for big brand names only
While some people believe that Instagram is only meant for big-name brands, this is simply not the case. You definitely don’t have to have a large budget in order to leverage the visual appeal of Instagram.
Instagram is a free outlet and can help create awareness of your brand and generate sales leads for companies and vendors on any budget. It’s all about how you utilize the tool and creating visuals that will connect with users.
Instagram has even highlighted in its own blog how small businesses can truly become successful on the platform, take @primosdonutsla on #NationalDonutDay, for example.
2. It’s all about the photos
Instagram is primarily a visual platform, and it can be used to inspire others to engage in its visual format. For example, you can employ a photo submission contest, asking customers to submit a photo of them enjoying your product for a chance to win a prize. This encourages customers to engage with your business and Instagram beyond the typical viewing and liking of photos.
Many restaurants have noticed the trend of users “Instagramming” their food prior to eating it, so they created a hashtag in order to engage their audience and reach potential customers.
The New York-based restaurant, Comodo, has been able to bring in more business by simply using the hashtag #ComodoMenu. This tactic increased the amount of views by 50 percent in just one month!
Another simple tactic is for vendors to ask their buyers to take a quick snapshot of themselves along with their recent purchase and use their desired hashtag when posting it. It’s all about the engagement, both online and offline, that increases the power of your voice through Instagram.
3. It’s only for selling products
This might be the biggest misconception about Instagram. While posting images of products that are visually stimulating certainly may help sell them, all businesses can benefit from a creative presence on Instagram.
As a business, you need to find valuable imagery and video content to share with your audience. If your product isn’t really visual – software, for example – you can always use imagery that conveys your company’s ideals and culture to engage with customers. Get creative and have fun with the platform and your Instagram following will grow.
